TikTok ads can be worth it for a small business if your offer is easy to show in a short video and you are willing to make new videos regularly. They are a poor fit if you cannot film anything or if your buyers decide slowly and in committees. The only reliable answer for your business comes from a small, well-measured test.
How TikTok ads differ from other ads
On TikTok people watch short vertical videos with sound, one after another. An ad is just another video in that stream. People did not search for you. They can swipe away in a second.
This has three practical effects:
- The video is the ad. Targeting matters less than on older platforms. The first two seconds decide whether anyone watches.
- Polished adverts often feel out of place. A simple phone video that looks like normal TikTok content usually fits better than a studio film.
- Videos wear out. The same clip gets tired quickly, so you need a steady supply of new ones.
Who it tends to suit and who it does not
| Often a good fit | Often a poor fit |
|---|---|
| Things you can show: food, beauty, fitness, crafts, before and after work | Services that are hard to show and need long explanation |
| Impulse or low-risk offers, such as a trial class or a first visit | Large purchases that several people must approve |
| An owner or team member who is happy on camera | Nobody has time or wish to film |
| A local offer with a clear reason to come now | A very narrow professional audience |
These are tendencies, not rules. The audience on TikTok is wider than many owners think, but the format still has to suit your offer.
Also check TikTok's advertising policies for your trade before you start. Some products and services are restricted or need approval, and the rules differ by country.
What you need before you start
- A TikTok Ads Manager account in your name, with your own payment method. If someone helps you, give them access to your account instead of using theirs.
- The TikTok Pixel on your website, so you can see which videos lead to enquiries or sales. In the EU and the UK the pixel may only load after the visitor agrees in your cookie banner. See what a tracking pixel is.
- A fast mobile page with one clear action. Almost every click comes from a phone. Use the landing page checklist.
- Five or six short videos ready before day one.
TikTok sets minimum budgets for campaigns and ad groups. They change over time and differ by country, so check the current figures in Ads Manager when you plan your test.
A simple video recipe
You do not need to dance or follow trends. A clear, useful clip of 15 to 30 seconds is enough. Film upright, in good light, with clear sound, and add captions because many people watch without sound.
Seconds 0 to 2, the hook: "Three things your hairdresser wishes you would stop doing."
Seconds 3 to 20, the proof: show it. Hands, tools, the result. One idea per video.
Last seconds, the next step: "New clients in [town] get a free consultation. Tap the link to book."
Ideas that small businesses can film in an hour:
- A before and after of one real job.
- One question customers always ask, answered in 20 seconds.
- A look behind the counter or into the workshop.
- A common mistake and how to avoid it.
If a normal post on your own profile does well, you can run that post as an ad. TikTok calls this Spark Ads.
How to run an honest test
Decide the rules before you spend, so you do not fool yourself afterwards.
- Budget: an amount you can afford to lose completely.
- Length: a fixed period, for example three to four weeks.
- Goal: one action that matters, such as a booking or a sent form. Views and likes are not the goal.
- Setup: one campaign, your real service area, a broad audience, several videos.
- Each week: pause the weakest videos and add new ones.
At the end, work out the cost per real enquiry. For example, if you spend 300 and get 10 real enquiries, each one cost 30. Compare that with what a customer is worth to you and with your other channels. If the figure does not work and new videos did not change it, stop. That is a useful result too.
Remember that ad platforms cannot see everything. Ask new customers how they found you and write it down.
TikTok or Meta first?
If you have never run paid ads, many small local businesses start with Meta because simple photos work there and the local targeting is familiar. See Meta ads for a local business. TikTok is a good second test once you have a working page, tracking and a habit of making short videos. The same videos can often run on Instagram Reels as well.
If you want help with the technical side, Astranode offers an ads setup service by quote for Meta and TikTok: ad account, pixel, first campaigns and landing page. You pay the ad budget directly to the platform, and nobody can promise you results.
TikTok ads are worth testing if you can show your offer in a short video and keep making new ones. Run a small fixed test, measure real enquiries, and stop if the numbers do not work.
