Before you pay for a single click, check that the page behind the ad can turn a visitor into an enquiry. A good landing page repeats the promise of the ad, asks for one action, loads fast on a phone and makes it easy to get in touch. The checklist below takes about an hour.
Why the page matters more than the ad
An ad only buys a visit. The page decides whether that visit becomes an enquiry. If the page is slow, confusing or about something else, you pay for every click and get nothing back.
Many small businesses send ad traffic to their homepage. A homepage has to serve everyone: new customers, old customers, job seekers, suppliers. A landing page serves one visitor with one question. This is why a simple page for one offer often does better than a beautiful homepage.
Fixing the page first is also cheaper. Changing a headline costs nothing. Sending paid visitors to a weak page costs money every day.
Check 1: Does the page match the ad?
The visitor clicked because of one promise. The first screen of the page must repeat that promise in almost the same words.
| The ad says | Weak page headline | Matching page headline |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler service in Leeds, fixed price | Welcome to Smith Heating | Fixed-price boiler service in Leeds |
| Free trial class for beginners | Our studio and our story | Book your free beginner class |
| Bridal make-up, dates for next summer | Services | Bridal make-up: check your date for next summer |
- Same offer, same town, same price or condition as in the ad.
- The same photo or style, so the visitor knows they are in the right place.
- One page per offer. If you advertise three services, build three short pages.
Check 2: One page, one action
Decide what you want the visitor to do. Call, send a form, or book a time. Pick one main action and repeat it.
- The button is visible without scrolling on a phone.
- The button says what happens: Get my quote, Book a free class, Call now. Not Submit.
- The same button appears again after each longer block of text.
- The phone number is a tap-to-call link.
- No menu full of other pages. Each extra link is a way out.
- The form asks only for what you need for the first reply. Name, contact detail and one question are often enough.
A simple order for the page: headline, one supporting sentence, button, three benefits, proof, answers to common questions, button again.
Check 3: Speed, phone view and trust
Most clicks from Meta and TikTok come from phones, often on mobile data. Test the page on your own phone with Wi-Fi switched off.
- The page shows its headline and button quickly. If you get bored waiting, so will the visitor.
- Images are compressed. A photo straight from a camera is far too large.
- Text is readable without zooming, and buttons are big enough for a thumb.
- No pop-up covers the page in the first seconds, apart from the cookie banner.
- The page opens correctly inside the Instagram, Facebook and TikTok in-app browsers.
Then check trust. A stranger is deciding whether to give you their phone number.
- Real photos of you, your team or your work. Not stock photos.
- Real reviews, with a link to where they were posted. Never write your own.
- Your business name, address and a way to reach a person.
- Clear prices, or at least a clear starting price and what it includes.
- A privacy policy, and any legal notice your country requires.
Check 4: Tracking and what happens after the click
You can only improve what you can count.
- After the form is sent, the visitor lands on a thank-you page. That makes one enquiry easy to count as one conversion.
- The pixel is installed and tested. In the EU and UK it may only load after the visitor accepts it in the cookie banner. See what a tracking pixel is.
- You sent a test enquiry yourself and it arrived in the right inbox, not in spam.
The last check is the one people forget. What happens in the first minutes after someone sends the form? If the answer is nothing until tomorrow, a good share of your ad budget is wasted, because the visitor keeps looking.
At minimum, show a clear message and send a confirmation:
Thank you, [first name]. We have your request for [service]. We will call you today before 6 pm on the number you gave us. If it is urgent, call [phone number].
Only promise a reply time that you can keep every day.
The one-hour test before you start
- Open the ad and the page side by side. Do they say the same thing?
- Show the page to someone who does not know your business for five seconds. Ask what you offer and what they should do next.
- Fill in the form on your phone, on mobile data.
- Check that the enquiry arrives and that the confirmation is sent.
- Check that the conversion appears in your ad account's test tool.
- Start with a small daily budget and look at the numbers after a week, not after a day.
No checklist can guarantee enquiries. It only removes the avoidable reasons for losing them. If you want help, Astranode sets up ad accounts, tracking, first campaigns and the landing page as an ads setup service by quote, and Never Miss a Lead can send the instant reply and alert you when a form arrives.
Fix the page before you buy the clicks: same promise as the ad, one clear action, fast on a phone, and a reply within minutes after the form is sent.
