Why your website gets visitors but no enquiries

Your website has visitors but nobody gets in touch. Here are the common reasons and a simple checklist you can work through this week.

A website with visitors and no enquiries usually has one of three problems: the wrong visitors, an unclear offer, or a contact step that is too hard. The good news is that you can check all three yourself in an afternoon. This guide walks you through the checks in order.

First check who is actually visiting

Before you change the site, look at where the visitors come from. Open your analytics tool or Google Search Console and answer three questions.

  • Which pages do people land on? If most visits go to an old blog post about a side topic, those readers were never going to hire you.
  • Which search terms bring them? A plumber in Leeds does not need visitors who search for a general plumbing definition from another country.
  • Is a share of the traffic not human? Bots and your own visits can make a small site look busier than it is.

If the visitors are wrong, the site itself may be fine. Then the work is on your pages and search terms, not on your contact form.

Run the five-second test

Show your homepage to someone who does not know your business. Take it away after five seconds. Then ask:

  1. What does this business do?
  2. Where does it work, or for whom?
  3. What should you do next if you are interested?

If the person cannot answer all three, the top of your page needs work. A good first screen has a plain headline, one supporting sentence and one button. Here is a pattern you can copy:

Boiler repair in Leeds, usually within 48 hours.
Gas Safe registered engineers. Fixed price before we start.
[Request a call back]

Avoid headlines such as "Welcome to our website" or "Quality you can trust". They say nothing a visitor can act on.

Make contact easy on a phone

Many small business sites are visited mostly on phones. Test your own contact path on your phone, with mobile data, not office wifi.

  • Phone number: is it visible at the top and can you tap it to call?
  • Form length: name, contact detail and one message field are enough for a first enquiry. Every extra required field loses people.
  • Button text: "Get a quote" or "Book a call" is clearer than "Submit".
  • After sending: does the visitor see a clear confirmation with what happens next?
  • Does the form work at all? Send a test enquiry today. Forms break quietly after updates, and the messages sometimes land in a spam folder.

That last point is more common than owners expect. A broken form looks exactly like "no enquiries".

Give people a reason to trust you

A visitor who does not know you is taking a small risk by writing to you. Reduce that risk with real, checkable details.

"Fair prices"A price range or a "from" price with what it includes

"Many happy customers"Real reviews with a link to where they were posted

Only publish reviews and numbers that are true. Invented testimonials are easy to spot and in many countries they are against consumer law.

Check speed and the basics

A slow page loses visitors before they read a word. You can test your site for free with Google PageSpeed Insights. The usual causes are simple:

  • Very large images that were uploaded straight from a camera or phone.
  • Many plugins, pop-ups, chat widgets and tracking scripts loading at once.
  • Cheap hosting that is slow at busy times.

Also check that the site has a valid security certificate (the address starts with https), that no pop-up covers the content on a phone, and that the text is large enough to read without zooming.

Answer fast when an enquiry does arrive

Some sites do get enquiries, but the owner replies a day later and the person has already hired someone else. That feels like "the website does not work", but the problem is the reply time.

A simple fix is an automatic first reply that confirms you got the message and says when you will call back:

Hi [Name], thanks for your message. We have received it and will call you today before 5 pm. If it is urgent, call us on [number]. [Your name], [Business]

You can set this up in most form tools. If you want it handled for you, including an alert to your phone and polite follow-ups, that is what Never Miss a Lead does. If the site itself needs a rebuild, Astranode also offers website development by quote. If you plan to send paid traffic to the site, read the landing page checklist first.

The short version

Check the visitors first, then the first screen, then the contact step. Send a test enquiry through your own form today, because a broken form is the cheapest problem to fix.

Questions

Good to know

How many enquiries should a website get?
There is no honest general number. It depends on your trade, your prices and who visits. Compare your own months with each other instead of comparing with other businesses.
Do I need a new website to get more enquiries?
Often not. A clearer headline, a shorter form, a visible phone number and faster images can be changed on an existing site. A rebuild makes sense when the site is hard to edit, slow or broken on phones.
How do I know if my contact form works?
Fill it in yourself from a phone using a private email address. Check that the message arrives in your inbox, not in spam, and that the visitor sees a confirmation.
